Kobukan Kobudo Renmei’s Inaugural Event: A Journey of Tradition, Unity, and Fun

The temperate September air in Ontario, Canada, carried a sense of anticipation as martial artists from around the world gathered for a historic event. From September 15th through the 17th, the Kobukan Kobudo Renmei organization opened its doors to participants from Canada, the United States, and the UK, creating an atmosphere that felt like one big family reunion. But, this wasn’t just a renunion, it was the official start to the new Takamatsu-den organization, teaching Japanese Ju-jutsu and Ninpo martial arts with a sense of both tradition and modern practicality.

From the moment attendees arrived, they were enveloped in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Kobukan Kobudo Renmei community is known for its ego-free environment, where newcomers and seasoned practitioners alike instantly felt at home. Kancho James Wright, a reknowned master martial artist, traveled from Japan to lead the seminar, setting a tone of humility, approachability and openness.

Exploring Traditional Martial Arts

The heart of the event was, of course, the traditional martial arts training. Participants dove into the world of Japanese martial arts with a focus on Kukishin Ryu Hanbo-jutsu Shoden Gata, Kukishin Ryu Bo-jutsu Sabaki Gata, and Gyokko Ryu Churyaku No Maki. These techniques have been passed down through generations and hold a special place in the hearts of all Takamatsu-den martial arts practitioners.

“I don’t see a reason for “secrets”,” Kancho Wright explained. “I will teach you everything, nothing held back.”

But, the training sessions were not just about physical techniques; they were a journey into tradition, philosophy, and self-discovery. Kancho Wright’s guidance and wisdom resonated with everyone present, making each technique come alive with history and purpose.

Outside of training, discussions were alive with enthusiasm about the foundation and future direction of the Kobukan Kobudo Renmei organization. As one instructor put it, “We’re building something really special here, not just shaping an organization; we’re shaping a future where these ancient traditions can thrive. And, we’re going to offer training and instructor opportunities with an environment of shared personal growth, rather than self-centered leadership.”
