Overview of our Martial Lineage

The Kobukan Kobudo Renmei proudly carries forward the teachings and principles of the Takamatsu Toshitsugu and Sato Kinbei lineages, representing a profound depth of knowledge in classical Ninpo, Ju-Jutsu, and Japanese martial arts as a whole. Under the direction of James Wright Kancho, we maintain a direct connection to this heritage, ensuring that each technique and lesson passed down reflects the wisdom and effectiveness refined over generations.

James Wright Kancho, a renowned figure within the global Takamatsu-den community,  began his pursuit of classical Japanese martial arts in the mid-1980s and has since dedicated his life to mastering and preserving these traditions. With decades of experience and training across a number traditional ryu-ha (martial arts schools), Wright Kancho guides members of the Kobukan family worldwide from his headquarters in Japan. The Kobukan curriculum is anchored in the following ryu-ha:

  • Takagi Yoshin Ryu
  • Kukishin Ryu
  • Asayama Ichiden Ryu
  • Gyokko Ryu
  • Koto Ryu
  • Togakure Ryu
  • Shinden Fudo Ryu

In 2023, Wright Kancho founded the Kobukan Kobudo Renmei to share his vision of a traditional Ju-Jutsu and Ninpo organization that is free from unnecessary secrecy and focused on building a family-oriented environment where all can learn. His approach respects the past while embracing the needs of modern martial artists, striking a balance between tradition and real-world application. Through this organization, Kancho continues to offer a structured path for students to experience authentic martial arts and grow both in skill and character.
