Mastering Traditional Japanese Martial Arts for Practical Skill and Personal Growth
The Kobukan Kobudo Renmei offers a path to mastering classical Japanese martial arts, rooted in centuries-old traditions while emphasizing practical self-defense. Our training is designed for those seeking more than just technique—it’s about preserving ancient teachings and preparing for real-world scenarios. With a lineage tracing back hundreds of years through the renowned martial arts master Takamatsu Toshitsugu, our curriculum encompasses traditional Ju-Jutsu and Ninpo, providing a comprehensive education in the martial arts. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced student, Kobukan training blends time-honored wisdom with modern applications, ensuring that each practitioner progresses in both skill and character.
Our Training Philosophy
At the heart of the Kobukan Kobudo Renmei is a training philosophy that respects tradition while embracing the realities of modern self-defense. Our curriculum combines kata (structured forms), which preserve the essence of classical Japanese martial arts, with randori (free sparring), where techniques are tested in dynamic, real-world situations. This approach allows students to develop precision, discipline, and adaptability. Under the guidance of James Wright Kancho, training is not just about mastering movements, but about fostering humility, respect, and continuous growth. The Kobukan environment encourages learning at every level, from foundational basics to advanced concepts, all while staying true to the principles passed down through generations of martial artists.

The Curriculum: A Path to Mastery
The Kobukan Kobudo Renmei’s curriculum offers a structured path for students, starting with the pre-black belt levels that contain the core fundamentals of the ryu-ha we study. These are divided into three key stages: Shokyu (beginner), Chukyu (intermediate), and Jokyu (advanced), each building on foundational principles while introducing more complex techniques. These stages lay the groundwork for understanding the essence of classical Japanese martial arts while preparing students for more advanced training. Once students reach the black belt levels, they dive deeper into the ryu-ha, exploring the subtleties, advanced techniques, and strategic applications that are typically reserved for more experienced practitioners.
In addition to kata and structured drills, the Kobukan training system integrates a progressive randori approach at each level. This system allows students to gradually develop the ability to apply techniques in real-world self-defense situations. Starting with controlled and focused drills at the beginner level, students advance to more dynamic and fluid self-defense drills as they progress. This ensures that techniques are not only understood but can be effectively executed under pressure, preparing students to handle real-life encounters with confidence.
The Kobukan curriculum draws from classical ryu-ha such as Takagi Yoshin Ryu, Gyokko Ryu, and Kukishin Ryu, encompassing both unarmed techniques and weapon skills. This systematic approach ensures that each student gains a comprehensive understanding of the principles and applications of these arts. Testing and progression are carefully monitored, maintaining the high standards and authenticity of the lineage while allowing students to grow in both skill and character.
Training Paths: In-Person, Online and Events
The Kobukan Kobudo Renmei offers multiple training paths to accommodate the diverse needs of its members. While in-person training remains the gold standard for martial arts practice—offering hands-on experience, real-time feedback, and immersion in traditional dojo etiquette—we recognize that it’s not always realistic for everyone, especially those not near an affiliated Dojo or Training Group. For this reason, we provide additional opportunities to support member training through online resources and events.
In-person training at affiliated Dojo and Training Groups is the best way to build a strong foundation. Members learn directly under certified instructors, benefitting from expert guidance and correction from the very beginning of their journey. Whether you’re focused on kata, randori, or the nuances of classical techniques, in-person sessions provide the most authentic and effective learning environment.
For those who cannot regularly attend in-person classes, we offer robust online training options. Members have the opportunity to train directly with Wright Kancho through his weekly live classes, which deliver expert instruction in a flexible format. Additionally, Kobukan University provides a standardized curriculum that students can access at their own pace, covering a full range of techniques and principles from the comfort of their homes.
Events also play a vital role in the Kobukan community. Wright Kancho holds Taikai (international seminars) around the world, bringing members together for intensive training and fostering camaraderie across borders. Shibu (regional leaders) may host smaller events in their areas, and local Dojo frequently offer gatherings to support member development for their students. These events are invaluable opportunities to refine skills, engage with fellow practitioners, and deepen your connection to the Kobukan family.
By integrating in-person, online, and event-based training opportunities, the Kobukan Kobudo Renmei offers a flexible path that suits the unique schedules and needs of its members while staying true to the principles of traditional martial arts.
Progression and Testing
Advancing through the Kobukan’s ranks requires dedication, discipline, and mastery of key techniques. The path begins with the basics at the Shokyu level, progressing through intermediate and advanced stages, where students refine their skills and deepen their understanding. Testing is conducted with strict standards, ensuring that each promotion reflects genuine competence. Whether testing in person or through our online platform, students must demonstrate mastery in kata, randori, and self-defense scenarios. For those pursuing leadership roles, additional testing focuses on teaching skills and the ability to guide others. The Kobukan’s progression system is rigorous, ensuring that each rank is earned with a high standard.
