Ichi Shūnen Jinen: Honoring the First Year of Kobukan Kobudo

As we mark the first anniversary of Kobukan Kobudo Renmei on September 15, 2024, we reflect on a year of incredible growth and community building. Founded by James Wright Kancho, the Kobukan Kobudo Renmei emerged from a desire to breathe new life into the teachings of Takamatsu-den koryu arts, with a specific focus on Ninpo and Japanese Ju-jutsu. Wright Kancho recognized that much of the existing training lacked depth, with essential components like Randori being underrepresented. He envisioned an organization free from secrecy and politics, where the focus would be on practical self-defense, openness, and fostering a strong sense of community.

Key Milestones and Achievements of Year One

The journey began with a seminar in Ontario, Canada, where the vision for Kobukan was publicly shared for the first time. From that moment, the organization quickly grew, expanding to include dojo in Canada, the United States, and Europe, while also launching KobudoShop.com and the Kobukan University to make martial arts training more accessible. This first year, known as Ichi Shūnen Jinen, symbolizes the natural progression and growth of an organization built on strong values, friendships, and a commitment to providing unparalleled martial arts training to all.

Kobukan Kobudo Community Growth and Engagement

Over the past year, Kobukan Kobudo has fostered a welcoming and supportive community across multiple countries. From the U.S. and Canada to Europe, the organization has grown through the contributions of dedicated instructors and eager students. This commitment to inclusivity and high training standards has created a martial arts “home” for many. More than just a school, the Kobukan community has become a space where lifelong friendships are forged, and the values of respect, discipline, and shared growth are embraced by all.

Looking Ahead: Goals for the Next Year

In 2025, Kobukan Kobudo is set for continued growth with two major Taikai events—one in the UK in March and another in the US in October—bringing together martial artists from around the world. Alongside these events, we will launch new curriculums in Rokushaku Bo-jutsu and Biken-jutsu, and introduce a children’s curriculum. More courses will also be added to Kobukan University, and we anticipate the release of numerous new books (densho) to further enhance our martial arts education.
