Explaining Martial Arts | A Guide for Instructors on Speaking to New Students
A Kobukan guide to help martial arts instructors explain training clearly to beginners, parents, and prospective students—while honoring tradition.

As martial artists, we may be passionate about training, but explaining what we do in a way others can understand is a different skill entirely. Being a skilled technician is not the same as being a great instructor. One of our highest responsibilities is guiding people who are curious — whether they are potential students, parents, or members of the community. The way we answer “What do you teach?” should reflect the same professionalism, clarity, and respect that we bring to the dojo.
This article is part of the Kobukan’s Resources for Instructors series, created to help instructors represent the art with clarity and confidence. Here, we’ll share how to communicate about our training in a way that resonates with anyone new to the Kobukan — showing not only the value of the art itself, but also the professionalism that sets Kobukan instructors apart.
This resource is available exclusively for Kobukan instructors. If you are already an instructor, please log in to view the full guide.
If you are not yet an instructor but are interested in bringing authentic Jujutsu and Ninpo to your area, we’d love to talk with you. The Kobukan is growing around the world, and dedicated martial artists and community leaders are at the heart of that growth.
