Get to Know the Instructor
What inspired you to begin your martial arts journey, and what eventually led you to the Kobukan?
I began training as a child in the early 1980s, inspired by watching my father practice Karate. Martial arts quickly became something meaningful for our family, and as a teenager I continued training in Ninpo and other disciplines. Over the years, I traveled constantly to teach and train, which helped me develop both skill and perspective.
When I eventually met James Wright Kancho, I immediately recognized his depth of knowledge, technical precision, and genuine character. His approach to martial arts, rooted in tradition yet focused on realistic, effective movement, resonated deeply with me. When the Kobukan was founded, it perfectly aligned with everything I value in martial training: authenticity, practicality, and community.
What do you find unique or meaningful about the Kobukan approach to Jujutsu and Ninpo?
The Kobukan provides the most complete and practical martial arts training I’ve ever experienced. Kancho teaches authentic Japanese Jujutsu and Ninpo in a way that makes the principles truly usable, and he openly shares his knowledge with any student willing to dedicate themselves. It’s rare to find training that is both traditional and genuinely effective.
How would you describe your teaching philosophy to someone visiting your dojo for the first time?
My goal is to make training welcoming, methodical, and safe. Everything is taught progressively, so beginners never feel overwhelmed, and experienced students always feel challenged. From day one, new students are treated like valued members of the dojo — respected, supported, and encouraged.
What do students typically focus on during their first few months of training at your location?
New students learn the fundamentals of how we move, think, and train. We blend traditional kata-based principles with modern pressure testing to ensure techniques are realistic and applicable. The focus is on developing strong basics, understanding why techniques work, and training without ego.
In your experience, what skills or qualities does Kobukan training help students develop outside the dojo?
The most noticeable skill students develop early on is situational awareness (zanshin), one of the most important self-defense attributes. Training also improves balance, coordination, confidence, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Many students also describe a stronger sense of belonging and personal growth.
What principle or concept within the Kobukan curriculum do you feel best represents the “heart” of our training?
Completeness. The Kobukan curriculum is structured so students don’t just learn isolated techniques, but an entire system that fits together. Everything builds on clear principles, allowing students to understand the bigger picture and develop true capability rather than memorizing disconnected skills.
What do you enjoy most about teaching in the Newark, Delaware area community?
Our location at the Delaware–Maryland border allows us to train with students from both Newark and Elkton. It’s a relaxed area with a strong sense of community, and it’s rewarding to see how training positively impacts the people who live here.
How do you help beginners feel comfortable, safe, and supported on their first day of training?
I approach every new student with respect and patience. As both an instructor and Shibu-cho, I believe in being a servant-leader, someone who guides through support rather than authority. We focus on safety, clear communication, and creating an encouraging environment from the moment a student steps onto the mat.
What do you appreciate most about being part of an international organization like the Kobukan?
The people. The openness, friendship, and shared passion for authentic Japanese martial arts make the Kobukan truly special. The training is exceptional, but the community and culture are what make it feel like a family.
What advice or encouragement would you give someone considering beginning martial arts with you?
The hardest part is simply showing up for your first class. Everyone has challenges or hesitations, but you owe it to yourself to try something you’re drawn to. Reach out, visit, and take that first step — it may end up being one of the most meaningful decisions of your life.
